AMBASSADORIAL
SCHOLARSHIPS
AMBASSADORS OF GOODWILL
The Ambassadorial Scholarships program supports the vision of The Rotary Foundation to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by:
l Increasing awareness of and respect for cultural differences by sending ambassadors of goodwill to study in another country;
l Instilling in scholars the Rotary ideal of Service Above Self through active participation in Rotary service projects;
l Encouraging scholars to dedicate their personal and professional lives to improving the quality of life for the people of their home communities and countries;
l Developing leaders who can address the humanitarian needs of the world community;
l Impacting all areas of the world through a balanced geographical distribution of scholars;
l Encouraging Rotarians worldwide to increase the educational opportunities for scholars from low-income countries;
l Fostering a lifelong association between Rotary and its scholars.
During the study period, scholars are expected to be outstanding ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host country through appearances before Rotary clubs and districts, schools, civic organizations, and other forums. After study has been completed, scholars share their experiences with the people of their home countries and Rotarians who sponsored their scholarships.
ROTARIAN COUNSELORS
A unique benefit of Rotary Scholarships is the scholar’s association with Rotary clubs and Rotarians. Each scholar is assigned a sponsor and host Rotarian counselor who provide orientation and advice in preparing for and completing a successful study period in another country.
GENERAL ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must have completed at least two years of university or college course work, or must have a secondary school education and have been employed in a recognized vocation for at least two years when the scholarship begins. All applicants must be citizens of a country in which there is a Rotary club. Applicants must initially apply through a Rotary club located in the area of their legal or permanent residence, or place of full-time study or employment. Persons with disabilities and members of Rotaract clubs are eligible and encouraged to apply.
The following persons are ineligible for any Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship:
A Rotarian; an honorary Rotarian; an employee of a club, district, or other Rotary entity or of Rotary International; a spouse, lineal descendant (child or grandchild): a spouse of a lineal descendant, or an ancestor (parent or grandparent) of any living person in the foregoing categories.
ROTARY GRANTS FOR UNIVERSITY TEACHERS
The objectives of the Rotary Grants for University Teachers program are to:
l Build understanding while strengthening higher education in low-income countries;
l Promote the exchange of teaching methods and ideas between teachers at grant recipients’ home and host institutions;
l Advance development in low-income countries through sponsoring educators to teach subjects of practical benefit to the host country.
The program blends two of The Rotary Foundation’s most important emphases: education and volunteer service. Teachers are expected to be outstanding ambassadors of goodwill to the people of their host and home countries through appearances before Rotary clubs and districts. At the conclusion of the teaching period, grant recipients share their experiences with the people of their home countries and with the local Rotarians who sponsored their award.
Local Rotary districts may elect to award a grant of US$12,500 for 3-5 months of service or a grant of $22,500 for 6-10 months of service. Grants are awarded to higher education faculty to teach in low-income countries (other than their own). Low-income countries are defined as having a per capita GNP of $6,200 or less. A list of these countries is posted on the RI Web site at www.rotary.org.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must hold (or if retired, have held) a full-time college or university appointment for three or more years, but need not hold (or have held) a specific rank.
The subject(s) taught must have practical use to the host country.
The applicant’s home and host countries must contain at least one Rotary club.
The proposed host institution must be located in a low-income country.
Applicants must be proficient in the language of their prospective host country.
Applicants may be either Rotarians or non-Rotarians.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF UNIVERSITY TEACHERS
Grant recipients are responsible for making all arrangements with the host institution, both before and during the grant year, and for securing extended absence from their home institution.
Generally, recipients are expected to begin their service terms between 1 July and 30 June of the academic year for which they are applying
ACADEMIC-YEAR AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is for one regular academic year (usually nine months) of full-time study at an institution assigned by The Rotary Foundation Trustees. Because the scholarship is limited to one academic year, recipients may not be able to earn degrees or diplomas during the study period. The scholarship may also be used for vocational training. Since candidates are expected to be proficient in the language of the host country, generally this scholarship is not appropriate for study of a foreign language.
What does the scholarship cover?
The Academic-Year Scholarship provides a flat grant of US$23,000. Funding is intended to defray costs associated with round-trip transportation, one month of intensive language training (if assigned by the Foundation), required fees for a normal course load, reasonable room and board, and some educational supplies. The Foundation will not pay additional costs resulting from personal living preferences. Refer to the RI Web site, www.rotary.org, to confirm the award amount for a specific program year. Applicants who request and are assigned to an institution where costs exceed the flat grant amount must pay all additional costs.
MULTI-YEAR AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is for two years of full-time degree-oriented study at an institution assigned by The Rotary Foundation Trustees. The scholarship may be used for almost any field of study, as long as the scholar is enrolled in a specific university degree program and takes course work that relates directly to the completion of one degree.
What does the scholarship cover?
The Multi-Year Scholarship provides a flat grant of US$11,500 or its equivalent for each year. Refer to the RI Web site, www.rotary.org, to confirm the award amount for a specific program year. Funding is intended to help supplement the costs of pursuing one degree at one study institution. Expenses beyond the amount provided are the scholar’s responsibility.
CULTURAL AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is for either three or six months of intensive language training and cultural immersion at a language school selected by The Rotary Foundation Trustees. The three-month scholarship is most appropriate for studying a foreign language in which the applicant may already be somewhat proficient. The six-month scholarship is more appropriate for studying a language that presents a challenge to the applicant. Applicants are expected to have completed at least one year of college-level course work or equivalent of the proposed language of study.
What does the scholarship cover?
The Cultural Scholarship provides a flat grant of US$10,000 for a three-month scholarship and $15,000 for a six-month scholarship.
