Opportunity for Study Abroad through East Hartford Rotary Scholarship
The largess of an East Hartford High School alumnus has enabled the Rotary Club of East Hartford to offer a full-year study-abroad scholarship to an individual presently living or working in East Hartford. The Robert and Gladys Dunn Ambassadorial Scholarship was endowed by Dr. Robert Dunn and his wife to provide for a yearly $23,000 grant to an individual from East Hartford or West Hartford to study abroad at the university level. Dr. Dunn is a retired principal of Hall High School in West Hartford and a former East Hartford Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar himself. The persons receiving this grant are able to study within any field of their choice while acting as goodwill ambassadors for Rotary and the United States. The scholarship may also be used for vocational training.
The Dunn endowment calls for the Rotary Clubs of East Hartford and West Hartford to yearly submit the names of recommended individuals to Rotary's Regional District 7890 for final selection. Applicants must have completed at least two years of university or college course work. Alternatively, applicants must have completed secondary education and have been employed in a recognized vocation for at least two years when the scholarship begins. Over the past two years, individuals from West Hartford have been awarded the scholarship, and the East Hartford Rotary Club is eager to submit the name of its first candidate. The scholarships awarded through this year's process will select individuals to serve as Ambassadorial Scholars for the 2009-2010 academic year. Applications may be submitted at any time, but the East Hartford club must be able to submit a recommendation to the district by a June 1 deadline.
The selection process includes the completion of a lengthy application form with the assistance of local Rotarians. Applicants choose five universities at which they would like to study as an Ambassadorial Scholar. The applicants must be able to speak the language spoken in the country where their universities are located. The scholars’ choices are accommodated as often as possible; inevitably, however, not all applicants will receive their first choice of study institution. In completing the application, applicants agree to accept assignment to any of the five institutions they list.
The $23,000 award is intended to defray the costs associated with round-trip transportation, required university fees for a normal course load, reasonable room and board, and some educational supplies. Further information and application materials may be found at Rotary International's Website, www.rotary.org. Application forms are available from the Rotary Club of East Hartford by contacting the club's treasurer, Bill Secord, at wsecord@sbcglobal.net.
The Ambassadorial Scholarship program furthers Rotary's mission of promoting world peace and understanding. Through the support of Rotarians from both the host and sponsoring communities and of many other Rotarians worldwide, Ambassadorial Scholars have a unique opportunity to reach out to help meet the humanitarian needs of the community where they will be living. The scholars are encouraged to become leaders who will address the humanitarian needs of the entire world community and to dedicate their personal and professional lives to improving the quality of life for the people of their own communities.
The Rotary Foundation, as administrator of the worldwide Ambassadorial program, challenges its ambassadors to live up to Rotary International’s motto, Service Above Self.
